Roundstone, the inspiring arts and crafts village
Roundstone is a lovely little harbour with the perfect anchorage and guest moorings surrounded by the steep mountains of Connemara (known as the Twelve Bens or Twelve Pins). and a picturesque artisans’ village. It is one of the few safe and accessible anchorages along the rugged coast outside of Galway Bay. |

The village boasts several general stores, a restaurant and pub, a gallery, and an artisanal village where arts and crafts abound. One of Ireland’s original Bodran (traditional drum) makers is here, and we bought one to have onboard for those ceili nights in the harbour. It’s a great place to catch your breath for a while, only to have it catch in your throat when the dramatic light sweeps across the mountains. |
As we were enjoying the view on a hot summer day, the skies opened up and we were pelted with a shower of hail that bounced high up off the deck. Such weather has been unknown until now in Ireland, and is thought to be associated with climate change. We’ll remember our stop in Roundstone for a long time to come.
