Block Island Lighthouses

bluffs to its current location.

Southeast Light is in a spectacular setting on the top of Mohegan Bluffs and probably the most recognized site on the island. On a clear day, you can see Montauk. Built in 1865, the lighthouse was recently moved from its perch on the precipice which is slowly being claimed by the sea. The light could be seen 21 miles out to sea but it is no longer operational at the lighthouse, having been replaced by a modern light and horn. It is in process of being restored and is open to the public. The special overlook has recently been closed due to erosion of the cliffs, but you can still walk down the stairs to the waters edge. Not for the faint of heart!

North Light is a lovely walk to the end
of the earth.

North Light was built in 1867 of granite from Connecticut , and functioned as a navigational aid on Sandy Point until 1972. It took the place of an earlier light that was washed away. It was restored and relit by the town of New Shoreham in 1989 and is now open to the public daily in season. Getting to it is requires a fairly long walk so be prepared with good shoes. There is a parking lot at Sachem Pond, a fresh water pond where you can go swimming surrounded by 143 acres of sand dunes, beach grass and wild roses on conservation land. It is strongly advised not to swim at Sandy Point because of the strong rip currents. Check out the names on Settlers Rock, where the original settlers swam ashore 300 years ago due to lack of a harbor. Small wedding parties may now reserve Block Island 's North Light for indoor or outdoor evening ceremonies. This is one of the most hauntingly beautiful places in the world.
