Camden, ME

View of Camden Harbor.
The latitude of Camden is 44.209N. The longitude is -69.065W.

Camden is perhaps coastal Maine's premiere destination. Known as "the village where the mountains meet the sea," Camden is a breathtakingly beautiful seaside community. It is one of the most photographed harbors in New England, with white-steepled churches, narrow streets lined with quaint shops and restaurants, ample parks and commons and stately old homes. Shopping in century-old storefronts along crooked streets, in welcoming wharf-front boutiques, and in country shops down winding lanes, you'll find some of the best locally made arts and crafts and all kinds of goodies. Expect to be tempted, and plan to give in. On special midsummer and autumn weekends, you're in for a special treat: juried arts-and-crafts fairs sprawling along the street and parks overlooking Camden Harbor, creating a festive air as well as an unsurpassed opportunity to do some early Christmas shopping. The population, at the time of the 2000 census, was 5,254.

General:

Tour the delightful, but often crowded Camden downtown right along the waterfront. There are many great shops, book stores, and provisioning sources. Saturday morning is the Camden Farmer's Market (9:00-12:00) on Colcord Avenue. If you are feeling energetic, go kayaking (Camden Kayak or info@camdenkayak.com) where you can tour the harbor or the islands with experienced sea kayaking guides. Renting bikes at Brown Dog (236-6664, $15/day) is another option. Or you can hike the Camden Hills all the way up Mount Battie to find inspiration as described by Edna St. Vincent Millay in Renascence - she grew up here. For a more relaxing time, take the Camden Historical Society's walking tour (2.5 miles) with a stop at the Conway House-Cramer Museum or a 2-4 hour excursion on one of Camden's Windjammers. Some advance reading might include Edna St. Vincent Millay's Renascence or Savage Beauty: The Life of Edna St. Vincent Millay by Nancy Milford.

There are many good restaurants in Camden for lunch and dinner, and you can eat lobsters within yards of where they are caught. Consider a reservation at the Hartstone Inn for the 7pm dinner seating, $40 prix fixe (236-4259).
