Things to do: |
It is known as the "Lobster Capital of the World" and the estimated population, in 2003, was 7,613. The Shore Village Lighthouse Museum houses one of the largest collections of lighthouse memorabilia in the country (hours 10-4, 594-0311). Pick up an Arts Walking Tour map from the Chamber of Commerce and tour the art and crafts galleries that surround the museum. Walk restored Main Street with its gas lights, galleries, quirky shops.
The Farnsworth Museum and the Wyeth Center has the finest Wyeth collection in the world plus a wonderful collection of other Maine artists. The Owls Head Transportation Museum is filled with planes, cars and all manner of vehicles. Get in the mood ahead of time by reading Wondrous Strange: The Wyeth Tradition by Howard Pyle, N.C. Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth and James Wyeth, An American Vision: Three Generations of Wyeth Art, and Essays by James H. Duff, Andrew Wyeth, Thomas Hoving and Lincoln Kirstein. If you are feeling a bit blue, the Sanctuary Day Spa will perk you right up. Walk the 4 mile Harbor Trail from North end wharves to Snow Marine Park and/or the .8 mile breakwater out to Rockland Breakwater Light House.Watch (and maybe visit) the schooners Rockland is home to the largest windjammer fleet in the country.Dinner at Primo (highly recommended) Friday night take a cab 596-0770 entrees $16-30 |
